According to Lithuanian legend, a girl named Neringa blessed by the goddess Laima was born in a one Curonian village. She grew up to be a beautiful giant, incredibly strong with a good heart.
She used her strength and kindness to help people in every way she could, especially the local village fishermen. She chose many ways to help, using her wisdom, compassion and physical strength in different moments.
Once a storm raged for several years, sea waves brought water and sand flooding fields and meadows. and even threatened the local Ventė Castle.
Neringa came up with the idea to protect people from the force of the sea waves. She carried sand in her apron to the sea, poured dunes, laid pine trees, and threw stones to block the force of the water.
She poured an entire stretch of land - a sandy path, separated the raging sea from the lagoon. The fisherman were safe to catch fish without fear of the raging sea.
Out of gratitude, people named the Curonian Spit after this beautiful giant, an area now called Neringa.
